Assembly Line Challenge

ATTENTION West Virginia High School Teachers!

Thinking critically about the importance of simple machines in everyday life?

The challenge requires students to design and evaluate solutions to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller steps and using the engineering design process.

CONTEST begins Monday, May 4, 2020 | All submissions must be received by 5:00 pm Monday, May 11th

PRIZES:
Five classes, randomly selected, will win a $100 AMAZON GIFT CARD to use for their classrooms.

To be eligible for the drawling, high school teachers at least 5 entries to be entered into the drawling.

HOW IT WORKS:
Students will design an assembly line machine (aka Chain Reaction or Rube Goldberg Machine) that uses at least 8 simple machines to accomplish a task that they have selected.  A simple blueprint with identification labels for the materials used and the type of machine for each step must be included.  The student will manufacture their machine and modify its design as needed.

Students will submit a video that (1) identifies the problem they are solving; (2) briefly explains the machines and process of the assembly line; (3) successfully demonstrates the entire machine.  Videos should be no longer than 90 seconds. The assembly line should take at least 30 seconds.

Students will send completed videos to their teacher(s) either as a URL to their video or as a file.

Students are encouraged to post finished video to their social media account along with the hashtag: #wvexplorechallenge.  Make sure to include the name of your school!
